Normal people, from all walks of life, all variations of history, and all locations through space and time, suddenly find themselves in a new land. A strange place, with no access to the outside world, they must now make their home amidst strange and unusual people - some of whom are beings far different than any they have seen before.

Welcome!

The Fantasy Alternative (TFA) is an original theme role playing game currently in development. We are looking for creative thinkers who are able to help with ideas, building suggestions, plot concepts and similar tasks. Coding is not required, nor is administrative experience - just a creative mind, and an ability to communicate ideas.

TFA is not based on any books. It's an alternative to the many MU* RPGs out there that are based on established worlds (comics, movies, television, books, etc). We do have a theme, alluded to in the blurb above. We are fantasy - sword and sorcery - with a tech level of about the middle ages.

The background concept listed above is a very broad overview. More information is available through the links below. The development positions are NOT administrative slots - management will not be recruited until closer to opening time. If you want to help but don't want to get stuck with responsibility, that's fine... we understand.

Because several people who may be helping with the development of TFA are not familiar with MU* style games, a series of essays are available. These essays also include information about the philosophy behind the game design, and are therefore Required Reading for anyone who is interested in helping out.

Interested parties should email chars@fantasyalternative.org indicating if they wish to join development or to receive more information. People wishing to receive announcements about TFA (such as pre-opening) should send email to the same address, specifying their request. [Note, 27 July: This para requires updating]

As the world's culture develops, short stories and basic histories will be made available on this site. Once the initial stories are available, short fiction pieces based in this world will be welcome, pending the submission guidelines that are posted. At this time, while there are no submission guidelines yet, the posted history and stories may be found here.

TFA is the brainchild of Melissa (also known as Tabbifli, Light, or Tabbi), most recently one of the head wizards on Tales of Ta'veren. She was one of the principal developers and wizards of PernMUSH in its initial opening (1991), and has had experience in various types of games. Despite occasional tales to the contrary, she really doesn't bite. She can be reached through email: melissa@fantasyalternative.org

The news file is several years out of date. However, it contains an older version our policy and basic information. Server-specific information is no longer accurate, and other changes need to be reflected. Click here to read it.

Since the game is still in development, there is a great deal of information available regarding that dev. The information has been sorted as cleanly as possible, but it's a lot to keep up with. The list of available information is found on the Development Links Page.
