![[The Fantasy
Alternative: MUSH Resources, Wheel of Time Information, and
home of TFA and Cuendillar MUSH]](graphics/TFA-1.jpg)
[03/14/2003] I (Melissa) am once again attempting to finally get this site in something resembling finished order. It's only been two years since I started and all. Below are the rough ideas.
Once that's done, TFA will once again be in dev, with a dev team of 1 - me. Also, the code and other things that are supposed to be available for the ftp site will be reviewed. Again. And I'm going to put a damn counter on this page (does anyone actually ever visit?). Now back to your regularly scheduled page. -- Melissa
The roleplaying world of MUSH (and, to a similar extent, MUX, MOO, MUCK, and all of the tinyMUD derivatives) is a community of people who enjoy getting together and living a fantasy life for a while. That is both the idea behind the game and the site, Fantasy Alternative. While we have some specific game resources (for example, TFA, the game, is rather prominently featured, and the now-closed Wheel of Time game, Tales of Ta'veren, holds its archives here), we also want to provide general resources for the MUSH community.
In here, you will find an FTP site featuring MUSHcode, a MUSH-based tutorial for installation into games, and several seminars. There is also a series of papers for the MUSH community - for the new players, there is information on how to connect, what clients are, and how to create characters. For more advanced players, we have a guide to administrating and suggestions for character design. Additionally, along with the Tales of Ta'veren log archives are also general Wheel of Time information section, put together and maintained by Rhonda Peters, also known as the author of the Wheel of Time Concordance
Finally, just for the fun of it, we'll include some amusing pictures we've received and some very strange mail we've gotten over the years. Links to our home-pages are also included.
Melissa can be reached by email, and Rhonda can be reached the same way. We don't mind getting suggestions about possible links or information to add, although we can both be terrible correspondents.
A last word: This page is boring. I know that. It's the initial page. I (Melissa) don't have the time, energy, or brain-power to make it "look cool". I'll get to it. Right now, the information and making the links work is more important than "jazzy."
Still in development, TFA is intended to be an original-theme roleplay environment. Melissa, formerly of Tales of Ta'veren, is working with a group of people (both associated with Tales and not) to fully develop a culture and environment that will both welcome new members and challenge veteran role-players.
TFA will be running on a PennMUSH, with server support provided by Talek of the PennMUSH development team. Located on this machine, it will have a java-client associated with it, and we hope to be listed in mudconnector when we're open as well.
Although this is now linked in, even the initial web page is still in development, just keep in mind that any information you find is fluid, and may go through several permutations before it is done. Once we're ready for players, we will go through a three-step process of invitations, followed by open registration, followed by actual advertising. Please check back regularly for updates.
The MU* resources available on this site (code help, admin tips, role-play guides, etc.) will remain available, and will hopefully be updated and expanded some time in March.
Softcode! Tutorials! Information! And it's all under construction and likely to get switched around at a moment's notice. The information is jumbled together. We'll go through it soon and sort it. Check back regularly to see what changes. The softcode comes WITHOUT WARRANTY and is under the Gnu Public License. Please download a copy of the license when you grab the code. (NOTE: This may change to Open Source). Regardless, I don't promise it'll work on your system, I just know that it worked on mine. I update things regularly, and when I get bug reports, I look into them. The MUSHcode was written for a tinyMUSH 2.2.4, and works (as far as anyone can tell) on a MUSH 3.0 system. Unsurprisingly, much of it will probably be transferred to Penn. When that happens, I'll make available the Penn varieties, too.
Fans of the Wheel of Time will enjoy our Wheel of Time resources. The Wheel of Time page contains more information on this setting and the books that brought it to life. Resources include links to index pages for Internet Wheel of Time material, the Robert Jordan newsgroup, fan art, and much more. Updates on publication information and other news about the books and their author will be posted on this page. The Illustrated Wheel of Time Worldbook provides information on the nations and culture of the game world, lavishly illustrated with fan art.
Tales of Ta'veren MUSH permanently closed its doors on February 25, 2001. The administration would like to thank all of the people who contributed to the game, both in role-play and behind-the-scenes, in its six years of operation and development.
Archives of Tales of Ta'veren information such as role-playing logs, State of the World pages, etc., will be posted here for the use of those continuing their characters on other games, and those who'd like a walk down memory lane.
Although the link above does work, please be advised that Links May Not Always Go Through!. This entire site is in flux, and this sub-section is as strange as the rest. We are updating things as fast as we can, but this is a huge site.
The Tales admin recommends this other Wheel of Time game, and is supporting this game by giving them access to Tales resources such as coded systems and information about the Wheel of Time. Cuendillar MUX has been running with its own time-line for several years, under the direction of one of the Tales wizards, and is home to many Tales players. New players may create their own characters, but are required to register an email address before playing.
Not all of the links are active yet, and the home-pages are extensively out of date.
